Art Therapy is a mental health profession that emphasizes the process over product of art making to strengthen and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-beings of all ages.
Art making, like other non verbal right brain activities (music, dance) has the unique ability to quickly tap into our memories and often times our "gut" reactions - the unformed raw feelings we have no name for. Art therapy offers the client an opportunity to help reprocess, reformulate and rename those reactions, offering a greater sense of awareness and new found ownership to those experiences. This can be especially useful in cases where traditional psychotherapy has been ineffective.
Art therapy provides an alternative means of communicating for those who cannot find the words to express anxiety, pain or emotions as a result of trauma, combat, physical abuse, loss of brain function, depression, and other debilitating health conditions.
No art experience required or needed.
